Local move within Maryland

Terrible experience.

We hired ProAce to move from a townhouse to a house 12 miles away. They gave the job to subcontractors who are full-time academics and do moving on the side to make extra cash. The problem was, they were bad at moving. Not only was it physically difficult for them to move heavy items, they also didn't know much about moving in general. The way they packed up the contents of our home was amateurish. Soft, non-breakable items – such as a foam mattress – were wrapped in six layers of bubble wrap and duct tape. They were also extremely slow. They had budgeted one day for packing and one day for moving. At the end of the first day they had only packed up half of our things. At one point it started raining, and instead of continuing to work, they just hung around the garage waiting for the rain to end. In addition, their truck was really small, meaning they needed to make 3 trips to empty a townhouse instead of being able to do it in one. Because this obviously took more time, we ended up paying the price. Also, although the trip between the two houses took us 30 minutes, somehow each trip took them 70 minutes. In the end, the entire move took 3 full days. By the evening of the 3rd day, we were so desperate to have them complete the job that we had them drop items in the garage for us to move inside and assemble ourselves – which meant WE did a large chunk of the work we were paying them for. We later discovered that many of the boxes had funny sayings scrawled on them. It was offensive to learn that they had wasted our time amusing themselves. Further, they were adamant that they could not fit our treadmill down our basement stairs. The very next morning, we did it ourselves. They did unnecessary things such as dismantling furniture that could have been moved whole. They removed the banister at our townhouse in order to get the bedroom furniture downstairs (even though the original movers who moved the furniture UPSTAIRS managed to do it just fine with the banister in place) and created a gaping hole that we then had to spend time and money repairing. There’s more. They left a leg of our patio table in their truck, rendering the table useless, and didn’t return it until a week later. They broke our TV stand (but to their credit, they did order a new one.) They lost the railing of a dresser drawer, rendering the entire dresser useless. When told about this, the owner told us that “replacement parts are probably available online.” Why is that our responsibility? When the move was finally over at 2 AM on Day 3, they forgot to return our house key and had to be texted to return in the middle of the night. Later, we found out they had left several items in our townhouse. At the end of it all, the charge was 300% of the original estimate. That meant that a 12-mile move cost us more than our last INTERSTATE move, with the same amount of belongings. When we questioned them, we got nothing but blame and excuses. Excuse #1: It was apparently our fault for underestimating how much we owned. (This despite the fact that we filled out a detailed online survey of our belongings. If 5 pages of questions could result in an estimate that was so drastically off-target, there is something wrong with the survey. Additionally, we, unlike many other people, actually know how much our belongings weigh because our last move was a military move, which requires having your moving truck weighed at a station.) Excuse #2: It was apparently our fault because we owned a lot of things. This is ridiculous. The CEO, Dan, never set foot in our house, and just believed everything the subcontractors were telling him. They TOLD him we had a lot of stuff in order to excuse their slow work, but it wasn’t true. Excuse #3: It was apparently our fault because our belongings were really heavy. That is absurd. We own exactly one bedroom set. The rest of our furniture is cheap and limited. Excuse #4: They charge more because they’re really careful. Really? Because they damaged more items than our last, cheaper, interstate movers did. Dan complained that despite our huge bill, he made almost no money. First of all, that’s not our problem. Secondly, if he's unhappy AND we're unhappy, something's seriously wrong with his business plan. In addition, although we spent $650 on boxes prior to the move at their request, we were charged an additional $500 for moving supplies. The reams of bubble wrap the movers wasted on toilet paper rolls got charged to us. In all, we were left infuriated at our treatment by this company and the subcontractors they used. To us, it feels like they committed fraud – they deliberately wasted time and material to drive up our cost, and they didn’t care at all about making the customer happy. This is money we don’t have and food out of our children’s mouths. We wonder if they’re writing fake positive online reviews about themselves. We have no choice but to make sure we spread the word far and wide to never, ever use ProAce Movers. .

Official company response

I am first extremely sorry for this review that was posted on mymovingreviews.com. I am first stunned with the details you posted on this site but as any moving company, I will share my side of the story as well as my crew. First, I was in constant contact with your husband all through the move. He never shared his discontent as he knew you had a lot of items to be packed. We have not charged you for additional men that were sent to get the move done on the third day. The inventory that was sent to us was under estimated, you had so much more items that were not listed. My guys were keeping in touch with me all through the move. Your judgement as to them not being movers and doing this just for cash is not a fair statement as I have sent them to many moves that I personally attended and was amazed on how quick they worked. You had so much stuff that needed packing. We replaced the TV stand that damaged and brought another one immediately. I was talking to Caleb, your husband, all through the move. Everything that he didn't want pack was put aside and my guys didn't pack. All the packing materials we purchased for your move, which what you gave us wasn't enough, we re-used it after you unpacked it at the house. The first day, once we brought the things to the house, we left you to unpack these boxes so we can re-use them and save you money. We purposely did that to lower the cost.
We also send more men that what you paid for at our cost, we stop the time earlier but the guys kept on working, which I had to pay, not you.
Committing fraud? I think this is a pretty harsh statement on your side. WE have provided a service to you and spend days to get the move done. You had so many pictures that had to be packed. My guys didn't pack the things that were put aside by you. We did everything in our power to make sure that every of your items get to destination safe and sound. On a local move, we do not need to weigh the truck, as it is not long distance.
We never said it is your fault to own things, but it is our responsibility to protect everything you have. WE worked hard to make sure that my guys protect the things that you cherish the most, and the things that didn't need packing were put aside because you wanted that.
We just followed standard procedures. I told your husband that we prefer not doing any packing because of these type of complaints, that customer always feel that they pay too much in supplies. I did mention this to him many times but he was adamant that we provided that service. You could have saved a lot of money if you would have done packing yourself in advance, in which I did cut some cost on the bill as well with the extra men we have sent on the last day of the move without charging you. We still had to pay our staff for these hours Laura.

I am not really sure how much more we can do to make customer happy when it comes to moving, but we know also that the moving industry, even the best movers in the world, will encounter complaints of that sort because to make a customer happy, we sometimes have to offer the move for free. That is the only way we can make customers happy. We work hard every day to offer great services to customers and for all the 3000 customers we serviced in our 15 years of business, a good 2995 are very satisfied with our work. There is no other way we can stay in business if we offer Pro-bono moves. We have expenses with insurance and we also did purchase a new TV stand to get shipped to your home when one leg got damaged. We needed to make sure to act quickly on this issue and took action to ship you another TV stand.

Again, my greatest apologies for this very difficult move you had and we never accused you to having to own too much. I never complained about not making enough money, I just mentioned to Caleb that despite closing time with the hours worked on your move, I had to pay my guys for more hours. That comes at a cost to us, yes, but when we lose money, this is our problem, not yours. It has nothing to do with our business plan, it has to do with unforeseen issues we experience in some moves we perform. That is a part of the business and any mover will tell you the same.

Overall, we have had way more difficult moves in the past that cost customers more and some less. When it comes to packing, I always recommend my customers to do the packing themselves so we avoid all these issues. This is a lesson that I will learn to be more adamant when it comes to packing and suggest customers to do it themselves or I simply do not provide the service. Supplies are not cheap and you saw that yourself as you bought just enough to cover a portion of the first day of packing. We had to buy some more as more items you had needed to get packed. We had no choice or we would have read another type of complaint if not everything would have been packed properly. I guess the say : "dam if you do, dam if you don't" applies in every industry, especially the moving industry.

This is my professional moving team explanation of the move on that day after sharing with them your discontent: To all readers, what is in " " is what the customer said, and below that is my team responses. Please review.

“Soft, non-breakable items - such as a foam mattress - were wrapped in six layers of bubble wrap and duct tape.”

We do not use duct tape, we used lots and lots of packing tape which we did not charge for in the packing materials. Any “soft, non-breakable items” that were wrapped were wrapped with shrink wrap to avoid staining or dust damage.

“At one point it started raining, and instead of continuing to work, they just hung around the garage waiting for the rain to end.”

When the rain first started there was a brief conversation the foreman had with Caleb regarding the move. I can ensure you no one was waiting out the rain as I remember how hard it was to see through the storm as I drove back. The rest of my crew was at the origional house packing up more furniture to be loaded.

“which meant WE did a large chunk of the work we were paying them for.”

Caleb mentioned the hours were stacking up so we told him let us do the heavy lifting into the house and we would leave the small things such as screwing some furniture back together to them. Which saved them money since they then only paid for the things they absolutly needed. Movers are hourly thus the only way for them to do “large chunk of the work” they were paying us for would be if we had stopped working and let them work unload instead.

“Further, they were adamant that they could not fit our treadmill down our basement stairs.”

We told them we had to take some parts of the tread mill to get it safely into the basement since the stair way was very narrow. We said we could do it, but it would take some time to remove the bolts and take the feet off. They agreed it was not worth the cost for something they could do them selves easily.

“ They did unnecessary things such as dismantling furniture that could have been moved whole.”

Certain Shelves made of partical board do not handle shaking well and can tear when shaking. Taking them apart actually protects them from this happening. Also it allowed us to move them faster in small spaces thus making up for any time lost taking them apart.

“created a gaping hole that we then had to spend time and money repairing.”

Caleb himself told us to remove the banister at the origional house. When doing so we saw several extra screw holes and signs that it had been removed many times before.

“They lost the railing of a dresser drawer, rendering the entire dresser useless. When told about this, the owner told us that "replacement parts are probably available online." “

One of the dresser drawer was missing a railing when we took it apart. It never had the railing to begin with. We did not have any reason to take anying railings for drawers off so we could not have been the ones to lose it. I told them it was not there when we moved it and they could possibly try getting one from the manufaturer.

“Later, we found out they had left several items in our townhouse.”

The only items left at the house were a propane tank and some planters, both items we told them was not legal for us to move. They fell under special transportation guide lines which federally we were not allowed to move.

“Excuse #4: They charge more because they're really careful. Really? Because they damaged more items than our last, cheaper, interstate movers did.”

Caleb himself stated the last move every single person in the crew was injured during the move. The only item broken we replaced by ordering a new more expensive version online to be shipped to them before we even told them it had broken.

Extra Notes: The very last day we had 2 extra people show up that we did not bill for at all.

Long-distance move from Maryland to Georgia

Very Professional.

I found ProAce through the BBB and they were highly rated there. I contacted them and they were in constant contact with us throughout the move preparation process. We ended up getting moved by a military contractor (I am in the Army), so we did not actually use ProAce. ProAce insisted on a visual evaluation of our belongings before giving us a price, unlike other movers who gave us quotes based solely on the weight to be moved. I am confident they would have done a good job for us.

Hey Brian
Thanks for considering us for your move. I know that being in the military would give you the benefits of having them relocate you. No matter what, I hope all went well and if you ever need us to move you out of Georgia, just give me a buzz, I would be happy to help you out.
Sincerely
DAn.

Long-distance move from Virginia to Maryland

Honest.

I moved from Virginia to Maryland and I wanted a company that's honest and upfront. I chose ProAce since an old neighbor recommended them. And it's locally owned as well. I was able to pick up the phone and ask Dan as many questions as I needed answered. He was quick, responsive and that's what I need in my busy schedule. The price was fair as well. It was a great experience and I would highly recommend them. In the past, I chose one of the big companies and so many things got damaged. Never again.

Long-distance move from Virginia to Maryland

Very competitive pricing and prompt in communication.

The movers I originally hired called me the night before to tell me that they had to postpone the move for a personal issue they had to resolve. I had to find another mover immediately to get my move done. I had to be out by June 30th. I visited the Better Business Bureau and called some companies with A rating. I came across ProAce Moving and Storage and contacted them. I also check their online recommendations to make sure I dealt with a decent and honest company. I spoke to Dan and he was understanding of my situation and wanted to help. Taken it being a last minute move, he helped me talk to the property manager to see if the move could be done on the first of july in the evening, since they already had another move scheduled. The property manager accepted as long as all my stuff was out by 6pm on July 1st. Proace loaded the truck in a jiffy. They were so quick and efficient. At that speed, I would think everything would be damaged. NOTHING was scratch or broken. They completed the move in less then 3 hours. I appreciate all your help and honesty. Being a last minute move, I would think they would charge me a premium but they didn't. It was the same as their advertised rate. Thank so much ProAce Moving for your great service.

Last minute movers.

I had other movers to come and help me unload but they never showed up. Scrambling for last minute movers, I came across ProAce and called them that same morning for unloading my container. They showed up one hour later and completed the job in 3 hours. Thanks ProAce for helping me in such short notice.
